NEGAUNEE -- Four people escaped unharmed in an early Sunday morning house fire in Negaunee.

It happened around 3 a.m. Negaunee Fire Department officials said they arrived at 1016 Baldwin Ave. to find the home completely engulfed in flames. Initial investigation showed a possible natural gas leak in the basement of the home causing an explosion. Crews were on scene for nearly six hours.

The Negaunee Township Fire, Marquette County Rescue Unit 131, Negaunee City Department of Public Works and personnel from Semco Energy all assisted on the scene.

The home is a total loss, according to officials.

The four occupants of the home at the time were homeowner Laura Gagnon, 94, her daughter Patricia Gagnon, 57, and two relatives visiting from downstate Onaway, Roseanne and Lowell Fleury.
