MARQUETTE -- Students competed in Marquette Senior High School's first Poetry Out Loud competition on Thursday afternoon.

Poetry Out Loud is a national poetry competition.  This is the first year the high school entered to compete.

Fourteen boys and girls were selected from classrooms to take part in the school competition.  Students recited two poems on stage in front of a panel of judges from Northern Michigan University. The selected poems were not original works by the competitors.

"There's an anthology of poems that you get to choose from, and there's judges that base you on your memorization, reading, poise, and physical appearance," said David Bashaw, sophomore.

Winners of school competitions move onto the state competition at Saginaw Valley State University on March 9.

Below is a list of winners:

First place-Emma Gregory, 11th grade, who recited "A Boat Beneath a Sunny Sky" by Lewis Carroll & "The Light the Dead See" by Frank Stanford. (Total Score of 223 points).

Second Place-Kelly Sprouse, 11th grade, who recited "Actaeon" by A.E. Stallings and "Cartoon Physics, part 1" by Nick Flynn. (Total Score of 213 points)

Third Place-David Bashaw, 10th grade, who recited "A Birthday" by Christina Rossetti and "The Blues Don't Change" by Al Young.
