MARQUETTE -- Kara Applekamp is doing everything she can to Be The Change in her community.  Through her job as an insurance agent and her volunteer work, she impacts the lives of people daily in Marquette.

She and her husband built a State Farm Insurance branch in Marquette, and because she's self employed, she makes time to volunteer.

Applekamp is the president of Marquette's Zonta branch, which is a group that aims to empower women and children and aims at teaching young people about how to be a good leader.

"Giving back is the fun part of what I'm able to do," said Applekamp.  "My team enjoys to go out.  I love taking my kids.  I take my kids to a lot of the events I do with Zonta and the high school girls at Z-club.  I want to teach my children how to volunteer and become members of their community.  That's what community is about--helping out and taking care of each other."

Kara and her family recently volunteered at the Special Olympics.

We are looking to feature Emerging Leaders in local communities who have a mission to serve those around them.
