MARQUETTE -- The Marquette Area Public School District Spelling Bee took place on Tuesday at Marquette High School.
Students from fifth through eighth grade squared off in a class spelling bee competition.
The students participate in the spelling bee on top of regular studies through the year. Winners from Tuesday received a trophy, and the top two competitors move on to the next round.
"The association we belong to, the Upper Peninsula Community Education Association, and other districts are competing in the same bee," said MAPS Spelling Bee Director Sara Cambensy. "It's the Scripps Spelling Bee; the finalists from our U.P.-wide spelling bee will head to Washington, D.C. to compete in the National Spelling Bee."
The winner for the eighth grade competition was Ricky Vermeulen. He will now go on to the regional competition to be held at Gilbert Elementary School in Gwinn in February.
