FLORENCE COUNTY, WI -- A Crystal Falls man was killed over the weekend in a traffic crash in Florence County, Wisconsin. It happened late Sunday afternoon at the intersection of Highway 70 and Highway 139 in Tipler Township.

Officials say 69-year-old Billy Cooper was traveling west on Highway 70 when he failed to stop for a stop sign. His car went into a ditch, became airborne and hit a tree.

Cooper was the only one in the car. He was pronounced dead at Northstar Hospital in Iron River.

Officials say freezing rain appears to be a contributing factor in the crash.
