MARQUETTE -- About 150 athletes competed in the annual Upper Peninsula Special Olympics Winter Games. The games technically started Friday evening with winter sports at Marquette Mountain.

On Saturday, all of the athletes walked in the Parade of Athletes and the torch was officially lit. Northern Michigan student athletes were there to assist and cheer on the Olympians.

Oganizers said the program has expanded throughout the years, creating a big difference for the athletes.

"There's something for them to do all year long, so they feel part of the family," said Sean O'Donnell, a coordinator.

"Sports brings out the best in everybody. Anyone can play a sport as long as you have it in your heart to succeed and do it," said Eric Davis, an NMU football player.

The athletes competed in field events inside the Superior Dome.
