MARQUETTE -- Whether it was no outdoor recess or no school at all, school kids across the Upper Peninsula were kept inside on Thursday.
More than a dozen schools in the western U.P. closed on Thursday due to subzero temperatures.
Schools in Marquette did stay open, but temperatures did create a few activity cancellations. At Sandy Knoll Elementary School, administrators say they don't make the decision to keep kids inside based just on what the thermometer says alone.
"Pretty much, two things will keep us inside: either rain or wind-chill," said Sandy Knoll Principal Kevin Hooper. "We don't look at just core temp, it's the wind factor that decides; even if it's above zero degrees, that will keep the kids inside."
The school says they do encourage kids to get out and play outside in the snow when it's warmer.
