MARQUETTE -- With temperatures dropping and snow accumulating, it's important to think of your pets when they're outside.

Each year PETA receives complaints about animals that are left outside in the cold.  Even though pets have fur coats, they can still be injured from the harsh weather.

Ice build up and salt on roads and driveways can hurt animal paws, and if their source of water freezes, they can become dehydrated.

"Frostbite can happen pretty quickly," said Shelter Manager Dayna Kennedy.  "And it's probably pretty painful.  I think it's important that people are protecting their pets."

If you are going to keep your dog outside this winter, be sure to install an insulated, well built dog house that faces away from the wind.
