CALUMET -- On Thursday, elementary school students from Calumet, Laurium, and the Keweenaw chose to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
First, second, and third grade students were matched with tenth graders as a part of the Big Brother/Big Sister mentoring program called High Five.
Students were given black, white, and colored paper to create poster collages.
The theme was Diversity Makes the World More Unique, and students got a chance to present their work.
"It's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and they need to understand teamwork," said Rachael Wilber, High Five Program Coordinator. "They also need to understand how to work together and appreciate each other. The black and white paper is not just about race, it's about how different parts come together to make a more interesting picture."
Students were asked questions like "why is diversity important," and they responded by saying colors make the world more interesting and one color is not better than the other.
Superior AmeriCorps members also worked with the students on their MLK Day projects.
