SAULT STE. MARIE -- A 61-year-old Sault Ste. Marie man is headed to federal prison for possessing child pornography, according to U.S. Attorney Donald A. Davis.

In addition to 63 months in prison, Curnel Wayland Matheny will serve five years of supervised release, pay a $100 assessment, and register as a sex offender.

On October 11, 2011, Matheny plead guilty to a felony of possession of images of minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct.  When Matheny entered the United States from Canada on November 17, 2009, a border search of his laptop revealed that he possessed child pornography.

A closer look discovered that Matheny used wireless internet service in several areas to access a child pornography website and engaged in online chats with other child pornographers.

The case against Matheny is part of Project Safe Childhood, which is a nationwide initiative designed to protect children from online exploitation and abuse.  For more information about the initiative, check out www.projectsafechildhood.gov
