The Eki Loppet had more than 50 skiers in the races
MUNISING -- Saturday was the third annual Eki Loppet at Valley Spur in Munising. The Eki Loppet had more than 50 skiers in the races. There were four races total, an 8K and 16K classic and an 8K and 16K freestyle. It was open to all ages at $20 each for registration. The money goes to the Friends of Valley Spur organization. They are volunteers that have kept the hill open for the last few years after the forest service could no longer afford to.
The money from this race is used to benefit children.
"What we're doing is trying to raise money for a kids' program we have here at Valley Spur on Sundays from 1 o'clock until 3 o'clock, and we're buying ski equipment for the children of Alger County so they can learn how to ski in the best ski spot in the whole Midwest," said Peggy Carberry, secretary at Friends of Valley Spur.
The Eki Loppet is named after Eki Vaisenen, a longtime skier and friend of Valley Spur.
