GRAND MARAIS -- Tragedy struck on Friday on a snowmobile trail in Alger County. One person has been killed in a snowmobiling crash. It happened Friday afternoon in Burt Township, near Grand Marais.
Police say a woman riding on a snowmobile fell off the machine, landing on the trail in front of an oncoming snowmobile. The woman was run over and died at the scene.
No name or hometown has been released at this time.
Michigan State Police and an accident investigator are on the scene.

State Police have released more information on a fatal snowmobile crash in Alger County.
The accident happened around 1:30 p.m. Friday on trail 88 in Burt Township. State police say 50-year-old Natalie Hugo of North Street, Michigan fell from her snowmobile and struck her head on an oncoming snowmobile. Hugo was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the other snowmobile was 30-year-old Justin Thayse of Green Bay, Wisconsin. Witnesses say neither snowmobiler was driving recklessly. Both were traveling 25 to 30 miles per hour. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident.
