MARQUETTE -- A new technology in orthopedics at Pioneer Surgical means better treatments for bone injuries.

nanOss Bioactive 3D is the newest advancement in the biologics division at Pioneer Surgical.  nanOss Bioactive 3D is a bone void filler.

It's a synthetic substitute that grafts onto bone injuries. Most often used on spines, it can be molded by the surgeon to fit near perfectly to the injury.

With a better fitting synthetic, bones can heal more efficiently.

"If there's a chip, it fills in that void and then eventually it's absorbed by the body, and then new bone is grown in there and what it does, it helps that naturally to grow faster," said Comm. & Compliance Officer Fred Taccolini.

The main goal of biologics research is to develop methods that allow the bone to heal more naturally.

Pioneer Surgical has operated in Marquette for 20 years, and it opened its biologics division in 2007.
