HOUGHTON -- The Portage Lake District Library in Houghton is offering a unique way to pay off overdue fines.

People can pay up to $10 in overdue fines by bringing in non-perishable food items.  This is an annual program that was started as a way to help contribute to the local food pantries in the area.

From now until the end of this month, people can participate in the library's Food for Fines program.

"Well, the food pantries, I believe, are running a little bit short this year, and it's hard times for everyone," said Program Director Chris Alquist.  "We just want to help, and people who don't have library fines are welcome to contribute."

People can also donate their fine money directly to the program.

The library says this is a great way to get people involved, and it helps the community.

Food items that have reached the expiration date or are close to it will not be accepted.
