LAURIUM -- A mother, a wife, a runner, and a friend are just a few of the words that describe 32-year-old Amy Roberts.

Roberts was running on Sharon Avenue near Military Road in Houghton when a vehicle, driven by an 80-year-old man, hit her. She is in critical condition at Marquette General, and immediately after the accident, Amy received two surgeries to reduce the swelling in her brain.

"I just saw her and she's no longer on low stimulation. They're trying to wake her up from her coma. She's basically making very, very good progress,” said Dorothy Jamison, friend of Amy.

An avid runner, Amy finished in the top ten percent of the Boston Marathon, and her friends and coworkers held a “Run Like the Finn” benefit walk/run. In an effort to connect with Amy and her passion for running, hundreds of people from around the community joined together to support the Roberts family.

When many first heard of the tragic news, they had similar reactions.

"A lot of praying and hoping and knowing that Amy would probably be OK," said Cathy Lucchesi-Gedda, friend of Amy.

Amy's immediate family was not in attendance, but they were able to see the event via Skype, and her husband, Buster Roberts, did give a statement.

"The support received from the community is humbling, and Amy has touched a lot of lives, and the support we're getting is helping us get through day by day."

This close-knit community rallied together to turn shocking and terrible news into triumph. The theme of this event is "sisu," and that means guts and determination. Amy's family, friends, and supporters say that is exactly what's going to get her through her injuries.
