ANN ARBOR (AP) -- A group that wants to legalize marijuana in Michigan has started an effort to get a measure before voters in November 2012.

AnnArbor.com reports the group Repeal Today For A Safer Michigan 2012 planned to hold an organizing event Thursday night in Ann Arbor.

A draft version of a petition obtained by AnnArbor.com says the effort seeks to amend the state constitution to make marijuana legal for people 21 and older.  More than 322,000 signatures from registered voters in Michigan would be needed to put that question on a statewide ballot.

The campaign's communications director, Charmie Gholson, says the collection of signatures is expected to begin in mid-January.

Current efforts include organizing volunteers.

Michigan voters approved medical marijuana in 2008, and authorities have been tightening enforcement.
