More than 500 coupon cards were handed out to high school students with hopes of encouraging them to spend their cash at local stores

IRON MT. -- The City of Iron Mountain has created a coupon program to encourage kids to shop locally.

More than 500 coupon cards were handed out to high school students with hopes of encouraging them to spend their cash at local stores instead of the big chain stores.

If a student spends $25 at a local establishment, then they get $5 off.

"We were hoping to bring more community members into the downtown area, and we were hoping that hitting the youth, we would get the family members and everybody to come down with the coupon," said Brooke Thompson, an intern at the city's office.

Some of the businesses participating in the program include Cuisine Art and Thunder Island Music.
