ESCANABA -- This fall, the City of Escanaba selected a new buyer for their power plant, Fuel Streamers Group, headquartered in Houston, Texas, but that buyer has now backed out.
According to electrical superintendent, Mike Furmanski, a consultant is now in the process of contacting the other parties who'd expressed previous interest in the plant. They are Traxys North America, Recast, Pro-Energy, and DTE Energy.
Furmanski said the big savings to Escanaba would be the yearly reduction in costs of owning and operating the plant; that figure is about four million dollars a year.
"The biggest issue for us was just transferring that plant to another party. It's a pretty big burden on the city. It wasn't totally unexpected, I guess, because we'd gotten to this point once before," explained Furmanski.
Officials say Fuel Streamers intended to continue operating the plant on coal, but they didn't tell city officials why they were no longer interested.
