MARQUETTE -- You've probably been told not to go outside without a hat, but as some learned Saturday at Switchback Exchange in Marquette, there's quite a bit of other gear you need to stay warm outside.

Switchback hosted a workshop Saturday afternoon to help people learn how to stay warm, and hopefully participate in more winter outdoor activities. They said it's all about retaining your heat and preventing heat loss. One place you may be surprised to gear up: the soles of your feet.

They said it's important to securely cover every part of your body to keep the heat in.

"Little things really add up, so you're losing a lot of heat through your feet, hands because they cover a lot of surface area, don't cover your hands and feet and you can lose that heat," Lindsay Bean, director of Outdoor Ed, said.

You don't have to necessarily don the latest heat technology to stay warm, but rather go for items with down feathers or wool, as those retain the most heat.
