ESCANABA -- A national program is striving to bring an alternative option for athletic programs in schools.
The National Archery in the Schools Program works with the Department of Natural Resources. They train physical education teachers across the country. Teachers are then able to begin archery programs in their schools.
The program is for grades four through 12. Teachers are required to attend an eight-hour training program and become certified.
"It teaches them the archery skills so they can properly teach their students how to shoot a bow and arrow," said local Archery in the Schools volunteer coordinator Erick Kestila.
The course includes training in range setup, proper shooting skills, archery history, and safety. Hundreds of schools in Michigan have the program. Only about 20 schools in the U.P. remain without one.
