MARQUETTE -- Local Finns celebrated the start of the holiday season with their own traditions.
Pikkujuolu, or "Small Christmas," is a traditional celebration in Finland, bringing together friends and family for an evening of food, laughter, music and dancing. That scene was recreated at the Masonic Center in Marquette on Sunday, thanks to the Finnish-American Society.
Dozens of Finnish-Americans, some even born overseas, came together to celebrate the holidays. On hand for entertainment were the Backwoods Boys.
"It's a tradition that was established in Finland, and we just want to continue that. Well, that's really the purpose of our organization is to promote and preserve all these Finnish traditions," said Ronald Hill, President of the Finnish-American Society of the U.P. Chapter.
Baked goodies and Finnish merchandise was also on sale.
