The staff at Pine Mountain is hoping for a Dec. 10 opening.

IRON MT. -- There's good news for Dickinson County skiers and snowboarders. Pine Mountain Ski Resort has started making snow, and it's covering the slopes.

The staff at Pine Mountain is hoping for a Dec. 10 opening, but if the temperature rises to more than 32 degrees, they'll have to shut down snow production.

Snowmaking is a process that's not as simple as it sounds.

"Basically, the idea is trying to get the water into as fine a particle as possible, throw it up in the air, and then give it some dry time," Scott Grubb, GM of Pine Mountain, said.

"It'll turn into snow before it hits the ground. A lot of variables go into making that happen."

If they do have to shut down the machines then the opening will be pushed back to Dec. 17.
