U.P. -- The Michigan State Police in Lansing recently announced the disbanding of the Upper Peninsula bomb squad.
The U.P. bomb squad consisted of two part-time employees that received training in explosives.
The state found the cost to train those positions and provide equipment outweighed the calls for service in the U.P. This comes as part of the department's statewide re-organization. If there's an explosive found in the U.P., a downstate Michigan State Police unit will travel to the site.
"Most of the calls that we receive here in the Upper Peninsula, where we need that expertise of a bomb technician, it isn't an emergency type response and we can actually plan out and schedule what is most advantageous and where those technicians would come from," MSP Capt. Myles McCormack said.
State police said U.P. residents won't see any difference with the change. If a severe emergency were to present itself, bomb technicians could be flown to the site.
