HOUGHTON -- On October 4, around 5:30 a.m., a 19-year-old Michigan Tech student said she was sexually assaulted while jogging on the Houghton Bike Trail next to Lakeshore Drive, according to Michigan Tech.
The victim reported the incident to authorities on Thursday, saying that a man emerged from the bushes, pinned her to the ground, groped her, then fled.
MTU's Public Safety says students should always be aware of their surroundings and they have some safety tips for all students.
"It's always a good idea to walk in pairs when possible," said Director and Chief of Public Safety, Dan Bennett. "Also, carry your cell phone in your hand readily available. Carry your car keys in your hand as you're walking out to your parking lot."
Public Safety Police Services also says they have a safe walk program. Any student, staff or faculty who doesn't feel safe walking to their car, class or residence hall, can call the office and an escort will be provided as an extra safety measure.
The Houghton Police Department and MTU's Public Safety is currently investigating the sexual assault and are asking anyone with information to contact them.
