MARQUETTE -- After many months and discussions, the City of Marquette will sell 100 acres of the Heartwood Forest Land to the Marquette County Solid Waste Authority for $180,000.

The City Commission voted six to one to approve the sale for use by the authority to mine sand for their facilities which service the city.

Some residents spoke against the sale stating the land could be better used for recreational purposes.  But the commission ultimately decided the sale to the landfill would benefit the city financially.

"Transporting sand over the road is expensive, so this goes a long way towards reducing costs and looking out for the interest of the City of Marquette," said Richard Aho of the Marquette County Solid Waste Authority.

Under the city's Heartwood Forest Land agreement, the money generated from the sale must to go offsetting the five million dollar purchase price.
