Increased bandwidth
HOUGHTON -- If you live in the Keweenaw and have a smart phone, you may have noticed a change in your service.
AT&T customers are finally able to connect their phones to the 3G network.
3G is a wireless communication for mobile phones that allows internet access, text messaging and cellular phone calls.
AT&T has upgraded their towers to increase bandwidth.
This increase in capacity is similar to adding more lanes on a highway.
“Our new AT&T network turned up on Wednesday and we turned it on from north of the Keweenaw from the lake in the Fulton area down through Lake Linden, though Hancock and Houghton and all the way out through the Chassell area,” said Retail Sales Manager Tom Rae.
AT&T says for their customers it means America’s fastest mobile broadband network is in the Houghton area and it allows customers to surf the web and talk on the phone at the same time.
If you're a Verizon customer, this new network does not apply.
Verizon says they've had the 3G network for at least two years.
