Caring for farm animals
NISULA -- This 200 acre farm houses and cares for over 50 animals.
Separate pastures are being built in order to accommodate more animals.
The Fern Gully Acres Farm Animal Shelter and Sanctuary's goal is to ensure farm animals have a safe place to go especially when people cannot keep them anymore.
The animals are fed and given water twice a day which usually takes about two hours.
Most animals grow winter coats and gain weight during the winter in order to keep warm and with the proper shelter, they do just fine.
“Volunteers have come out to help us out and get the animals ready for winter. We've gotten in over 65 animals in the past couple of months and with winter coming, it is going to be a lot busier with surrenders of animals,” said owner Gina Lopez.
For Lopez and her family, the animals come first. She also feels that animals are the forgotten ones and providing them with the best care is very important.
Neglected and abused animals are brought back to life at this sanctuary and all farm animals are accepted.
Animal sanctuaries like this one help needy animals and give volunteers a chance to make a difference.
"I called her up and asked if she could use some help and she said yes. She had just gotten 60 animals in and need some help trimming goat hooves,” said volunteer Jessica Hurd.
Volunteers are more than welcome to help muck stalls, feed, and clean the animals as well as help build shelter.
Some of these animals are up for adoption and are looking for permanent homes.
This farm is always looking for donations and if you are interested in visiting or volunteering, go to ferngullyacres.com
