The Soo tribe of Chippewa Indians and Potawatomi tribe is still active near Bark River-Harris
BARK RIVER -- November is Native American Heritage Month, and Bark River-Harris Elementary students are marking it with two days of traditions.
They kicked off the educational celebrations on Friday with a star lab. The Native Americans used the constellations as a calendar and a guide. The school says Native American traditions are particularly important in their community because they still exist.
The Soo tribe of Chippewa Indians and Potawatomi tribe is still active near Bark River-Harris.
"We live in an area with a lot of Native Americans living right around us, right within us, and it's important to share different cultures with all of our students to bring awareness and to kind of gap those segregations that somewhat still exist sometimes," said Kristy Erickson, a teacher.
The school will have an interactive Native American music program on Monday.
