While the men were out hunting for deer, women were inside hunting for Christmas presents, that's the idea behind Ladies Night--a 15-year-old Marquette tradition.

"It's a retail event, but also a way to give women a chance to come in and make a wish list for their Christmas presents," said Mona Lang, executive director of the Downtown Development Authority, which organizes the event.

Deals, discounts and drawings were at businesses from Washington to Third. Temperatures were down outside, but participation was up. This year, 58 businesses opened their doors to women in comparison to 46 last year.

"What it does is it really gives Marquette the opportunity to showcase locally-owned, independent businesses. Sometimes people don't realize the number and the quality of procedure that we have in our downtown and on Third Street," Lang said.

Another business added to the mix for the 15th year, the brand new Marquette Regional History Center. Drinks, eats and live music were the perfect relaxing end to an otherwise busy evening of shopping.

"They were having music and food and drink, and so we just planned to meet here after doing all the stores," said Jane Arnsten of Marquette.

"It's a great gathering place; it's just a really neat place to come," added Ginger Rutgers, also of Marquette.

The evening may be over, but for one lucky lady, the fun hasn't stopped just yet. The DDA will select a raffle ticket for a gift basket worth $2,400 next Tuesday.
