The Michigan Department of Natural Resources in Marquette says because of the cold and damp weather, it's too early to tell what the deer count will look like this hunting season.

As of Tuesday afternoon, seven deer were checked in at the office.  The biggest was an eight-point buck, and officials say they saw several two-and-a-half-year-old bucks with nice antlers.

Hunters will tend to wait to bring deer in due to the weather.

"With the cold temperatures, it's not necessary to get them processed right away; they can take their time and stay at camp and those kinds of things," said DNR Wildlife Biologist, Brian Roell.

Officials expect things to pick up at the station later in the week.

They say the opening day numbers are typical.
