MARQUETTE -- Student athletes at NMU are doing their part for the community and helping the TV6 Canathon.

Members of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee are asking hockey fans to bring non-perishable items when they head to this weekend's hockey games against Michigan State.  They'll have collection boxes at each of the ticket entrances in the Berry Events Center, and they've already put boxes in the athletes' locker rooms.

Organizers say this is a great chance for the community to get involved and have fun at the same time.

"It is during the holidays and I think that's just when a lot of people start to think about how fortunate they are and how they can help out the community, and it's just an easy way for people to give back to the community, just by donating a few cans, not more than two dollars each," said NMU Student Athletic Advisory Committee member, Olivia Juntila.

The hockey games start at 7:30 p.m. and the collection boxes will be out from 7 p.m. until the second period of each game.
