MENOMINEE -- A Menominee man has been sentenced to a year and a half in prison in Maine for filing false veterans claims.

The U.S. Attorney's office says 45-year-old Mark Palmquist received nearly $50,000 in checks that were intended for a former spouse and child.

Palmquist previously lived in Maine.

He also was convicted of illegally receiving benefits for an alleged back condition after he created a false document from a Marine Corps detachment commander.

Along with 18 months in prison, he was ordered to pay the money back.
