MARQUETTE -- Hundreds of students are competing for full-ride scholarships at Northern Michigan University.

Current high school seniors will participate in the Presidential Scholars Competition this month.  Students will be judged on their high school grade point average and their ACT and SAT scores.  They'll engage in group solving problems and they'll interview one-on-one with faculty to score qualifying points.

Only the top 10 percent are awarded.

"Everyone finds out about the scholarship outcomes prior to the December holidays, so around mid-December, we get to make those phone calls to the top 10 percent of the competitors," said Gerri Daniles, NMU Director of Admissions.  "It's great news.  We like the screams and the tears and everything that's wrapped up into it."

Last year, out of the 313 students that competed, 31 were awarded scholarships.
