Newly appointed Supervisor Alvar Maki spoke to residents about road improvements, downtown development and Kennecott Mine safety concerns
MICHIGAMME TOWNSHIP -- Residents and business owners of Michigamme Township met their township's new officials Friday afternoon, while getting answers about the Kennecott Mine.
Supervisor Alvar Maki had been recently appointed in taking the position of John Olson, who passed away in August. Maki spoke about issues the township plans to tackle such as road improvements and downtown development.
Also in attendance, Kennecott President Adam Burley, who answered a number of questions from residents concerning water safety, ore transportation and the use of the Humboldt Mill in the next several years.
"Our relationship with the Kennecott Mine is to make sure that they're protecting the environment," said Supervisor Alvar Maki. "We also want to work with them to assure that this mine is going to happen, and they will provide us with tax money through the ore taxes which will benefit the township financially."
Maki added he hopes to see a population increase through development in the township.
