MARQUETTE -- When you change your clocks this weekend you should also change your smoke detector batteries.

Some say it's an easy reminder that could save your life.  Smoke detectors should be tested at least once a month.

If the detector chirps, that means it's time to change the battery.  Marquette residents can get a free nine volt battery from the city fire department.

"We try to get out and educate the community on all of the good points of having smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in your home," said Fire Inspector Brian Naze.  "That simple little thing of stopping, and they're so inexpensive these days, and purchasing a smoke detector or carbon monoxide detector may save you and your family's life."

Children 14 and younger, and adults 65 and older, are the highest risk victims of house fires and the Marquette City Fire Department offers free smoke detectors to their families.
