The Kingsford mail processing facility may close in march
People in Dickinson County are trying to save the USPS processing center in Kingsford. It processes all the mail in the UP, but now it's being targeted for possible closure. Representatives from the United States Postal Service paid a visit to Kingsford to listen to resident’s concerns.
Many questions were asked of the USPS reps, but they didn't have many answers. Most of the time questions were asked to be put in writing because they couldn't be answered at that time.
“It's strictly about cost that's the overriding factor bringing us to this,” one USPS rep said.
The United States Postal Service may reduce the number of mail processing centers by over 50% by 2013. There are currently about 450 of these processing centers across the US. They want to have that number down to about 200 within the next couple years.
There is a policy in place to relocate processing center employees to another facility within fifty miles. However there isn't another facility within fifty miles. The closest one is in green bay.
The UP is the largest geographical district east of the Mississippi. The USPS wants the processing center in Green Bay to handle all of the mail from now on. This could mean slower turnarounds for everyone.
About fifty jobs would be lost should the processing center close. A final decision regarding the facility is not expected until March.
