NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP -- Earlier this week we had a brilliant display of Northern Lights. In Thursday's Facebook Story of the Day we found that the best place in the Upper Peninsula for viewing the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, is on a dark, cloudless night looking towards the northern horizon.
"They were amazing and extraordinary. I don't think I have seen them like that, and that prevalent in the Upper Peninsula," wrote one Facebook fan.
That storm was particularly intense, causing the phenomenon to be seen as far as south Louisiana.
"Because of the intensity of the aurora on Monday night, the aurora halo stretched down right over the Great Lakes," said amateur astronomer Scott Stobbelaar. "So it was actually visible in a lot of the Midwestern states."
These natural light shows are caused by collisions of electric particles high above the surface of the Earth. They are related to ejections of energy from the sun.
