IRON MOUNTAIN -- An Iron Mountain boutique came up with a clever fundraiser. It's aimed at helping one cancer patient get on the road to recovery. Katie Uren, a twenty five year old Kingsford high school graduate, has been diagnosed with cancer. In these tough economic times money is tight. To help Katie, the Amber Rayz Boutique decided to step up.
“We saw a picture in a magazine of pumpkins painted pink and then it kind of evolved into let's glitz them up and then let's do them for a fundraiser for Katie,” Jodie Farrington says.
Their expectations were low at first. Originally they thought they’d raise a few hundred dollars for Katie's husband so he could travel to Texas where she receives treatment.
Since the beginning of October they've raised over four thousand dollars. Katie herself is blown away at the response to the pink pumpkins. Even with everything going on in her life, nothing seems to get her down.
“She's such a neat person she's so beautiful. And all the stuff she's going through you just can't even believe her attitude is so positive,” says Patti Bjorkman.
There's also a book, "New Breast Friends" by Diane Casperson, wife of State Representative Tom Casperson. Diane will donate one dollar from each book sold toward Katie's treatment.
