MARQUETTE -- For the last 15 years, the Zonta Club has been recognizing local visionaries for women and children with the Evergreen Award, which used to be known as the Athena Award.
This year's recipient is Children's Museum Director Nheena Weyer Ittner. Weyer Ittner is recognized for accomplishments in her career for being an outstanding role model and mentor.
She's been with the Children's Museum for 20 years, creating employment for dozens of young people and fun for thousands of visitors. The award was announced at a luncheon Monday afternoon at Northern Michigan University.
"It's so amazing to live in a town with people like all of you where good things happen every day," said Nheena Weyer Ittner. "It is amazing. There's a spirit in this town, and that's why I love it, so thank you so much."
The Evergreen Award is just one of many honors Weyer Ittner has achieved. She's also received the Governor's Excellence Award in 2003 and Community Arts Activist from the City of Marquette in 2008.
