HANCOCK -- With rising energy costs, people will struggle to heat their homes in the winter, especially the elderly who live on a fixed social security check.
That's why Little Brothers, Friends of the Elderly in Hancock holds a wood cutting event each fall. Wood burning can be a more reasonable heating option.
Volunteers from AmeriCorps and Michigan Tech gathered in Portage Township, Tapiola, and Calumet to chop up firewood for the elderly.
"It's been a really, really hard economic time these last couple of years; gas prices and everything are up, so it's a godsend that we are able to do all of this," said volunteer Julie Beck.
This year Little Brothers in Hancock cut about 125 cords of wood that they'll hand out to more than 100 seniors.
