Gerrard Diaz is calling Iron Mountain the happiest place on sports earth in a recent Yahoo article
IRON MOUNTAIN -- Iron Mountain...that's the U.P. city writer Gerrard Diaz is calling the happiest place on sports earth in a recent Yahoo article. It's the hometown of Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo and former NFL head coach Steve Mariucci, both alums of Iron Mountain High School.
"I think that we are just very fortunate in this community, the heart of the U.P., that we have had a number of great teachers, coaches that have influenced our students," said Iron Mountain High School Superintendent Tom Jayne.
But in Iron Mountain, a passion for sports lasts a lifetime. And its location near the Michigan-Wisconsin border creates intense state rivalry.
For college football, you've got the Michigan Wolverines, the Wisconsin Badgers, and the MSU Spartans. As for the NFL, it's an even split between Super Bowl defending champions the Green Bay Packers, undefeated at the time of this article, and the Detroit Lions.
