MARQUETTE -- Many people have been avoiding cantaloupe due to contamination, however, dieticians say the melon can be safe as long as you protect yourself.

Recently there has been growing concern in the western U.S. over cantaloupe containing Listeria.

Jennifer Vajda is a registered dietician and food consultant.  She says some easy tips to avoid getting sick is to always clean surfaces and kitchen tools with bleach, wash your cantaloupe before cutting and keep it around 38 degrees to slow the growth of bacteria.

"It's a delicious fruit, it's safe; they are not the same fruit that is the Jensen Farm, Colorado farm that maybe were treated with some irrigation water that had Listeria,' said Vajda.

Anything thing you can do to keep your cantaloupe safe is heat and steam it to about 150 degrees, and remember cantaloupe only keeps for a couple days, and if it doesn't look right, just don't eat it.
