One of the most important ways to prepare is to have the right tires

ESCANABA -- Winter is approaching, and there are a few things you need to know about getting your car ready.

Between all-season and winter tires, some experts recommend winter tires, especially with the extreme U.P. conditions.  Mr. Tire owner, Toby Kuivinen, said their special tread compounds offer better traction.

“Tires nowadays, people just don't pay attention to them anymore,” said Kuivinen.  “Life is very busy.  The only time they'd pay attention to them, a lot of times, is when the tire pressure light comes on or something out of the ordinary happens."

A set of winter tires can cost between $300-$800.  But don't forget about the air pressure inside of them.  When temperatures drop or with severe temperature changes, you'll lose air pressure in your tires, so make sure you get it checked out once a month.

And many places can winterize your car for you.  This includes putting in anti-freeze and checking the battery.

Many people have already brought in their vehicles to be checked, like Nathan Neumeier, of Independent Roofing and Siding.

“We travel all over the U.P., into Wisconsin quite a bit,” explains Neumeier.  “So we put a lot of miles on during the year, and we have to make sure our equipment's ready to go so people get home safe."

But don't forget to have an emergency winter kit in your trunk.  It should include a blanket, a flashlight, and a good ice scraper and snow shovel.
