NEGAUNEE -- A few lucky students at Lakeview Elementary School in Negaunee traded the yellow school bus for a fire truck on Monday morning.

In honor of fire prevention month, students in kindergarten through fifth grade made posters in art class depicting fire safety.  Negaunee firefighters then picked out the best from each grade and awarded them with a ride.  Some students took time to explain their posters and their families' own emergency escape plan.

"I have the escape plan; you always need an escape plan," said fourth grader Rachel Schouten.  "And I have the fire alarm; you need a fire alarm so you know when there's a fire."

"Go out the door or window," said first grader Callie McEachern.  "I have a window close to the ground so I could just jump down."

The theme of this year's annual event was How to Protect Your Family From Fire.
