MARQUETTE -- The Downtown Marquette Farmers and Artisans Market is one of nine in the state receiving federal grants.  Marquette is slated to receive $46,000 of the total $470,000 distributed.

The Farmers Market Promotion Program grants from the U.S. Agricultural Department are designed to improve and expand the markets.

"One of the things that we would really like to do is enable people to shop smart and to know what to do with all the different produce because some of the things that grow here might not be as familiar to people, and the U.P. is perfectly capable of growing a lot of healthy food, and we want to teach people how to make delicious meals out of that," said Sarah Monte, market master.

Organizers say they also plan on using the grant money to buy additional tents and improve advertising for the market.
