MARQUETTE -- Knowing basic lifesaving skills is important, and experts at Northern Michigan University are offering classes to teach them.

The courses are based on the American Red Cross guidelines, and they are open to the public.  Those interested can become certified in CPR and other first aid skills needed while caring for an unconscious adult or child.

"You could be at a workout facility, you could be on your way to work and recognize that someone is in need of an emergency assistance, and basically what the first aid course does is provides individuals with the skills and knowledge necessary to respond to an immediate type of CPR or breathing-related emergency," said Katie Theut, NMU Fitness Manager and program organizer.

Classes are held at the NMU Physical Education Instructional Facility.

Water safety, lifeguarding and wilderness first-responder are among other classes offered.
