MARQUETTE -- It has been nearly a year since a domestic violence incident resulted in the murder of a young woman in Sawyer.

Last December, Brooklyn Neal was stabbed to death by her husband, Roy, who then killed himself.

Now, in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Brooklyn's sister and her best friend are teaming up to give back to victims of abuse.

As part of Operation: Help Harbor House, they are collecting items like clothing, toys, and toiletries for women and their children seeking refuge at Harbor House in Marquette.

"These women leave these houses, sometimes with just the clothes on their back," said Jaycie Weiland, Neal's best friend.

"For us to be able to give them something in return for leaving and tell them that we're proud of them for getting out before it's too late," said Neal's sister, Beth Houghton.  "There's nothing else we want more."

For a complete list of participating businesses, check out the Operation: Help Harbor House Facebook page.
