MARQUETTE -- Forget the yellow school bus.  On Wednesday, some Marquette elementary students opted to get to school by foot.

Marking the annual Walk and Roll to School Day, half a dozen kids walked from Lake Superior Village Youth and Family Center to Sandy Knoll Elementary School on Wednesday morning.

The walk was made possible by the Safe Routes to School grant through the YMCA of Marquette County.

Organizers say the community event is aimed not only to promote physical fitness, but also to care for the environment.

"Really, the focus is to promote physical activity and health, talk about safety hazards and how to safely walk to school, what to do, what not to do," said Jenna Zdunek of the Marquette County YMCA.  "Talk to them about what environmental impact they are making as well as increasing their physical activity."

The YMCA will sponsor a similar event later in October.
