MARQUETTE -- The Marquette community marked a somber day on Monday.  The commemoration for all victims of domestic violence took place on the corner of Norway and Fair Streets in Marquette.

In 1997, domestic violence lead to a woman's murder in that location.  In attendance were members of law enforcement, prosecutor attorneys and representatives of social service groups.

The message of the day was not only to remember victims, but to raise awareness of the help available.

"Safety is at the core of everything we do," said Phyllis Loonsfoot of the Women Center & Harbor House, "and we talk to survivors all the time about safety.  And for any survivor and their children, they can't take their safety for granted.  If you are experiencing domestic or sexual violence or you know someone that is, encourage them to make the call.  Support them, believe them, and provide them with a safe avenue to get help."

October is traditionally observed by social service organizations as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  The center offers a 24-hour crisis line at (906) 226-6611 or 1-800-455-6611.
