Bank customers being taken advantage of by computer scams
ESCANABA -- Banks and credit unions are some of the most secure institutions around. But sometimes even their customers can be targeted on the computer by fraudulent companies.
About three or four customers at the Peninsula Federal Credit Union in Escanaba have reported receiving e-mails from scammers posing as legitimate companies. Sometimes these scams ask the person to provide personal information or account numbers.
However, in this case the credit union members were asked to click on a transaction report link. None of the customers clicked on the link.
Jim Venesky, President and CEO of the Peninsula Federal Credit Union says, "If you think that maybe it's from us, or maybe it's not, I think the best thing to do is to contact your financial institution."
He says one of the best tips for those at home, have an effective spam filter that catches suspicious e-mails. And always remember not to give out personal information unless you're absolutely sure about who is on the other end receiving it.
